Several people have been killed and displaced approximately 3,500 families after heavy rains in central Somalia’s Hiiraan Region caused the Shabelle River to burst its banks late last week. The worst affected areas are around the town of Beletweyne. The water level in Beletweyne is reported to be receding but it is feared that it might rain again in the week according to FAO/SWALIM forecast.
Floods have devastated communities in central Somalia’s Hiiraan Region. According to the United Nations, 21,000 people have already been forced from their homes due to flooding of the Shabelle River. Hundreds of thousands more are at risk. Houses, wells, and latrines have been destroyed.

The United Nations reports that the damage includes: Six deaths, unspecified number of people injured. house, markets, and wells destroyed.
In response, ARC and HARO Somalia will deploy a joint emergency response team to the affected area to carry out an Initial Rapid Assessment. As well as members of the Somalia National Disaster Management Agency. In addition to conducting the rapid assessment, the team will: Distribute Non-food Items (NFI) packages to affected families. The NFI packs may include mosquito nets, plastic sheets, Soap and Jerry cans for water.
The Humanitarian African Organization looking for to raise $10,000 to distribute emergence supplies to needy families. Also conduct rapid assessment the humanitarian needs.
