Water

The importance of water to every living organism is well known to every human being. Almost everything depends on the availability of clean water from farming to cooking to cleaning and to drinking. Therefore, water is a necessity not need for humans to survive. Region by region and country by country water is not a resource that is equally distributed and as result some places have less water than other areas. Environmental and climate changes also contribute to the levels and availability of water in most parts of the world. Moreover, governments manage water resources more or less in a way that sustains the lives of its citizens.

Horn of Africa:

The horn of Africa is part of the sub-Saharan countries where water is a scarce commodity for a large part of it. There is a recurring draught in the horn of Africa with a devastating tall on millions of lives and mass displacement. Somalia is one of these countries affected by the recurring draughts where it caused many long lasting economic hardships. There are various affects emanating from the lack of access to clean water asUnited Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) says in its report “Only 45% of Somalis have access to improved water sources and this increases the risk of outbreaks of waterborne diseases“.In addition to that, the country does not have a stable central government that can deal with the emergencies caused by the draught and there are no government agencies which have viable programs towards water solutions. Therefore, the task of helping the affected communities falls on the shoulders of the nongovernmental humanitarian organizations.

HARO Drive:

We at HARO took on our shoulders the responsibility to initiate a water solutions project by drilling wells in areas that are needed the most. We have started with shallow wells or boreholes which are less expensive compared to deep wells. The construction of shallow wells costs $3,500.00 per well and our plan for 2018 is to construct 30 wells in the most affected areas. On the other hand, we are conducting studies to buy rigs which will enable us to build deep wells which will serve bigger areas and fulfill water needs of larger communities.

We appeal to all individuals and organizations to take part in this effort of providing clean water in where its needed the most.
